On February 26, 2020, in the first national documentary show "Cheers for You" by BTV, Hou Miaole, head of the research team for the digitalization and virtual restoration of the cultural heritage of Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, started from the post-reconstruction of Notre Dame Cathedral after the fire, took the digital protection of cultural treasures such as Dazu Rock Carvings and Yungang Caves as examples to vividly illustrates the true meaning of the digital restoration of cultural heritage, that is, the use of digital information processing technology to make cultural relics last forever in the digital world. The cultural relics conduct "physical examination" and "diagnosis and treatment report" to realize the automatic reconstruction of the defective parts and the virtual splicing of debris to provide scientific and technological support for the protection and repair of cultural relics.
Firstly,Establish Cooperation with BUCEA to Achieve Win-win Situation
Digsur has been cultivating in the field of cultural heritage protection for many years. It is the initiating and supporting unit of Cultural Heritage Protection Professional Committee of the Chinese Society for Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Cartography . It signed a signed a framework agreement for industry-university-research cooperation, an agreement on practical teaching bases, established a scholarship for college students, and launched a substantial industry-university-research cooperation with Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture. A number of representative results have been achieved in terms of refined information retention, quantitative virtual restoration, and diversified digital expression. 1. Precise surveying and digitizing projection of ancient buildings in Potala Palace
The Potala Palace Management Office and the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage provide a clear overview of the complex spatial structure within the Potala Palace ancient building complex and the relative positional relationship with the Red Mountain and the cave, while discovering hidden spaces, marking disease information, and retaining ancient building complex Complete and comprehensive three-dimensional information, and as the basis for the preventive protection of the Putra Palace, launched the accurate surveying and digitization of the ancient architectural complex of the Potala Palace in mid-summer 2016. Digsur is fortunate to participate in it. The initial results were unveiled at the Shanghai Construction Expo in 2017. Many of the project's results have attracted wide attention from all walks of life. This time the Potala Palace Fine Surveying and Mapping Project is a typical major achievement of industry-university-research cooperation. On March 25, 2019, when CCTV reported on the achievements of the 60th anniversary of Tibet ’s democratic reform, it took this project as an example to introduce the achievements made in the protection of Tibetan cultural heritage.
2. Chongqing Dazu Rock Carving Project
Entrusted by Dazu Rock Carving Research Institute and China Institute of cultural heritage, with the support and assistance of the design unit Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Digsur carried out three-dimensional digital surveying and mapping of many Dazu Rock Carving Grottoes using the most advanced technical methods. The comprehensive application of remote sensing technology, drone tilt photogrammetry technology, 3D laser scanning technology and close-range photogrammetry technology and many other space and color acquisition methods has achieved the preservation and archiving of cultural relics information in Dazu Stone Carved Alcove Cave, comprehensive application of protection engineering, cultural relic File digitized data automatic management, digital technology display. And use modern academic achievements and scientific and technological means to make a comprehensive and systematic arrangement of all the grottoes and stone carvings in the world heritage area in Dazu District, in order to reflect the overall picture of the development, protection and utilization of Dazu stone carvings over the years.
3.Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses 3D Scan, Virtual Repair and Display Project
The restoration of the Terracotta Warriors and Horse Warriors in Qin Shihuang's Terracotta Warriors requires a combination of scientific methods and craftsman experience. Digsur, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture and Emperor Qinshihuangs Mausoleum Site Park cooperated to complete the pilot project of 3D scanning, modeling, virtual restoration design and display application of Terracotta Army Terracotta Warriors in Pit No. 1 Pit, and accumulated successful experience for the restoration work.
Digsur and Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture have carried out scientific research cooperation and achieved fruitful scientific and technological achievements.
